job titles on resume

I was recently laid off from my job.  I am in the process of finding a new job.  In my old job, for accounting reasons, I was coded in HR as a technical writer.  My job did comprise anywhere from 25 - 50% writing; in reality, I was working as a business analyst.

How would I approach this on a resume to keep from getting pigeoned holed by my job title when I apply for business analyst jobs?

Thanks!

If your duties would more traditionally be reffered to as a Business Analyst, you can use the title on your resume. You could also combine the titles on your resume - Technical Writer / Business Analyst - then as you describe your duties it becomes apparent why you included both and the potential employer won't freak if they check and see your actual title.

Thanks!  I was thinking about doing something like that.

Thanks for responding.  smile

lw - Can you check in with the HR department and see if they would be willing to change your job title on record? Since you've been laid off, it might be no big deal for them to do this as a courtesy, and then your official title will match the one on your resume during a reference check.
