Resume/Reference Advice
Greetings everyone, I am struggling with a small issue. I left my previous job because it really affected my enjoyment of life and I didn't leave under horrible terms, but I found out as I was leaving that they don't do references. Evidently, my supervisor can't give me a reference under any circumstances because their policy is to only give dates of employment. This makes references for a resume challenging. How do I document something like this since it seems to becoming a more common procedure for institutions. As a side note, does anyone have any good ideas for re-designing my chronological resume into one that will allow me to broaden my field. I am really bad at selling myself and know that I have tremendous amount of skills (I worked at a University with student staff involving programming, crisis, etc - I worked in on-campus housing), but am not sure how to translate all of that and my Master's degree into something enjoyable. Thanks and sorry if this isn't exactly the correct way to write a message, but I have never used this before since my job searches were always so specific in my fields. HR here. Before we get started, ask your current employer how they do their reference checks? This is the answer that you need. Employment Verification is usually good enough. I can ask for whatever I want and your company can tell me whatever it wants and if its limited or non-existent then you don't get the job. A company is not going to jump through a lot of hoops, if there are 10 other equally qualified candidates applying for the same job. I have had candidates where nothing could be verified and they were no-hires. In the future, plan your "transitions". Save every pay stub you get from now until you collect Social Security. Save all your Performance Reviews, Awards and Certificates and tell your church pastor or rabbi to expect a call from your potential employers. I have had candidates come in now with their complete work history. We will still do our own due diligence but its still a good idea. As for your second question, this is my standard advice. Come up with $200 or $300 and have a pro do your resume. I have seen some really good work lately from professional resume writers.
