got fired....how to move on
i'm a junior in college currently and back when i was a senior in high school, i worked for a company and unfortunately, i was fired. i made a stupid mistake that violated company rules and had to be terminated. since then, i have been hired by another company but mostly because of my connections. now, i want to start working in a more professional environement (specifically something in a health-related field such as a doctors office) and I am not sure how to explain to interviewers that i had been fired. i'm sure once they do a background check, the dismissal would be evident so does anybody have any good advice on how to approach this. as this happened a long time ago, it is really starting to haunt me now . any help would be much appreciated. thank you Don't bring it up unless they ask you (it does not go on a resume). You may have to list it on an application or they may ask you why you left. Just say what you said here. You were very young, you didn't realize how important the company policy was and you learned a HUGE lesson from it and are now much more careful and much more mature. It won't be a huge big deal. Hi BobDoleX, Tess gave you great advice. You can also check out this article for tips on how to handle the termination on your resume: Resume Dilemma: Job Termination and Your Resume Best wishes for a successful job search! Kim Isaacs The Resume Expert
ok thanks for the help :). however, it seems nowadays, the online applications that some companies have (i really havn't had to deal with a resume requiring job yet) ask if you have been fired and if you have, it's much more difficult to get an interview. oftentimes i would lie or not answer the question in order to actually get an interview. in that case, would it be wise to bring up the dismissal seeing after a background check, they would figure ot the information? thanks | |
