How to explain job hopping

My husband has a string of 3 jobs in a 4 year span on his resume - a result of working in the Silicon Valley high-tech manufacturing industry during the late 90's bubble burst.  2 of the companies got acquired and moved overseas, and the other just didn't survive.  Because of this, it would appear that he was a job-hopper.  It would also appear that he wasn't very 'progressive', because obviously he had to start over again at the same level with each new job.

If we were still in the Bay area, odds are most potential employers would recognize the companies and know just by looking at the dates on his resume what happened.  But, we're now living in Canada, and employers around here won't know these companies or their history.  It's something that can be explained easy enough in an interview, but we're concerned he's not even getting that far because employers are just discarding his resume due to this.

Is there any way to tactfully note in each job section that the company closed or moved to outsource, or do we just take our chances and hope there's someone out there who won't automatically think the worst?

Thanks in advance! :)

You worry to much, I had mentioned company closed or shut down on my resume and left it at that. So that prospective employers do not see it as JOB HOPPING.(some do-remember, those are no doubt the ones you do not want to work for anyow :) I had several interviews and phone calls too, no problem. You need not be tactful about it, remember tact is diplomacy and Your resume isn't political....so don't use tact on it. Then a REALLY REALLY smart friend of mine told me to remove the explanation of "hopping" off my resume. Why? Because "a lot" of potential employers will see you as a worry-wort! Don't worry about it. Leave it off.

Talilor your resume to "get the interview" that is where all the questions are answered. That is also why we right resumes, not to "explain" difficult situations, but to highlight the good things you did while you where employed, however frequently.....ok?

Most employers maintain an open mind, they really don't care if your husband had 6 or 7 jobs, can you explain it? and be to the point/brief about it.  Also, use this "hopping" to your advantage, the more companies you work for, the more exposure you have to that companies way of business, this is an excellent selling point. This is also a good way to explain using temp. agencies, for exposure and you gain valuable exp as well as feeling out the company without real risk of loosing a job! Most companies use an agency of some kind anyhow, I've actually had those questions poised to me during an interview & turned it around in my favor.

hope this helps
