Relocation Dilemma
I am looking to relocate and join my fiancé who is attending medical school. As of this week I have signed a lease for an apartment with her in the new city and am paying rent, but I do not want to quit my current, reliable job until I have a commitment for employment in the new location. Financially, I can continue this dual-citizenship for as long as it takes, but I would rather move sooner than later. I have heard it said that many employers give non-local applicants a much lower priority, and some might even dismiss them out of hand. The Monster article on relocation suggests against using a local address if you are currently employed somewhere else, but I am wondering if this is a special case. Up until this point I have been using my California address on all my applications and have detailed my commitment to moving in the cover letter. It has been about a month since I sent out my first round of job applications, but I have received very little interest, even for jobs I believe I am very well qualified for. I know this isn't outside the realm of unreasonable timeframes for some employers, but I am beginning to wonder if I should change my approach when providing an address. How would I approach this issue on my resume? I considered providing a set timeline by using my target date for moving with "November 2004 - July 2007" instead of "November 2004 - Current" when describing the timeline for my current position, but it seems like having a future date might be just as confusing as leaving the "Current" label with the discrepancy in address. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! | |
