How do you create a good working Goal:

How do you create a good working goal for your resume, if you do not have enough experience to do a career summary? I am still entry level in the career I am trying to follow and have not done enough to make a summary. DOes anybody have any advice?

My personal opinion is that your goal (or objective) is not a first priority to any company. It might even work against you to put your career goal(s) on your resume, if a potential employer does not recognize him or her self in that goal.

Instead, my resume (and a pretty successful one for that matter) starts of with a profile, listing my skills. This will answer the one, most important, sales question: "What's in it for me?".

Once you've convinced others that you have something to offer then you'll get the interview.

Also make sure that this selling information in available on 1 (computer monitor) screen, without having to scroll down to read it all. Recruiters only spend a couple of seconds scanning resumes. The first lines need to grab their attention, otherwise they move on to the next.

PS: Do not underestimate the power of a good cover letter!

1. I respectfully disagree with Rick.  An Objective shows that you know what you're good for.

2. Just use an Objective like

An entry level position as a XX

and you'll be fine.

GOAL:  Looking to start a career in distribution pertaining specifically to the  processes of; Order Management, Inventory Control, Returns, Shipping and Receiving.

Will this work?

Hi bthomas,

Most employers don't care that you're starting your career. Instead, highlight the skills and training that would enable you to be successful in order management, inventory control, etc.

Check out job openings for the types of jobs you're looking for to see what employers look for in their ideal candidates. Yes, experience will probably be important, but what about important job-related skills? Write a list of your matching skills and other credentials, and weave that into your Objective/Summary Statement.

Good luck,
