Listing employers that have gone under

Hi There,

Any advice on the best way to list employers that have since gone out of business or have been bought out by new owners?

E.g. if I worked at company ABC back 5 years ago that's now owned by DEF Inc. and worked at XYZ 10 years ago that's since gone out of business, how should I display this?

Thanks.
Hi kawifan,

"E.g. if I worked at company ABC back 5 years ago that's now owned byDEF Inc. and worked at XYZ 10 years ago that's since gone out ofbusiness, how should I display this?"

For your company from five years ago, you can do something like:

ABC Co (now DEF Inc.), years of employment

You really don't need to mention that the company from ten years ago is out of business. Just include the company information as usual, and explain that they are out of business if you are asked at an interview.

I hope this helps!

HR lurking here! From here on out, you want to get a shoe box or better yet a safe deposit box and save every pay stub you get from now until the day you retire. Mine are in a safe deposit box. It is your responsibility to prove that you worked where you say you did.

I have seen cases where if employment cannot be verified, it was a No Hire situation. The smartest job candidates have a complete record of their employment file at home, including pay stubs, awards, certificates, classes, etc., and they bring all of this to the interview.

No job is forever anymore so document everything.
