New MBA needs help with his resume

Dear Kim Isaacs,

I will be graduating in August with my MBA. I have already started to look for jobs and many of the people I have showed my resume to have said it looked good but when I got in front of a former partner of the company I had my eye on, he said that he would not have taken a second look at it because the wording is very weak. I have taken my resume to my career center many times and each time they say it looks great. Do you have any advice that can help me strengthen my wording? Would you recommend changing or altering anything else on my resume? My goal is to try and get a job in management or strategic consulting in the D.C. area or in Atlanta, Ga. However I understand with my lack of experience I need to work on gaining more experience. Would you recommend targeting my resume for a consulting job or strengthen my resume, by taking a job that will help me boost my resume and eventually lead me into consulting? Also, I have heard two sides of the story about putting your GPA on your resume. I have a 3.6 but have been told not to put it on my resume, would you recommend that I put it in? Also could you explain your answer and why their is a divide on this issue? Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Rick

Hi Rick,

I think you should include your GPA because you're a new grad and your GPA is high, plus many management consulting firms like to see a GPA listed. As your career progresses, you can drop your GPA from your resume.

Best wishes,
Kim Isaacs
