Citing Experience
I'm a graphic designer who graduated in 2005. I do have a few years of experience working as a designer, 2 and a half years, almost. But there have been times that I have worked on a design project for other's or myself without pay, mostly just to do it. The jobs for other's were essentially freelance, but non paying jobs. And for myself over the past year in addition to my day job I've been designing products like paper goods and gift items and designing the packaging. I've been rather successful in selling these things and I feel like I should get to use that on a resume to cite experience. But how would I describe this on a resume? I guess I'm asking how does one describe freelance work on a resume? Or work they do personally?
Why not create a section on your resume for Freelane Work. Youdon't need to say it was free, that doesn't diminish the fact that youhave the experience of doing it. Plus, you should mention that you havesold items because that speaks to its appeal. There is a differencebetween working for FREE and working for NOTHING. You didn't do thisfor nothing, you got experience from it.
mocloisonne gave you great advice - set up a "Freelance" section on your resume and include a list of your most impressive assignments. You don't need to include every project ever done, just the ones that show a skill or accomplishment that's related to your current career goal. Best wishes, Kim Isaacs The Resume Expert | |
