Career change

I am sure this is a question that has been asked a million times, but I am stuck in a rut here.

I have a Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering Technology and am looking for a job in the tech industry.  Anything from programming to designing to testing would be great.  The problem is I have been working in the Automotive industry in a sales and sales management position for 10 years.  I received my degree 3 years ago and have been doing job searches in fits and starts and restarts since that time.  I seem to only get replies wanting me to do more sales or non-technical jobs.  I am not interested a career in sales any longer.  How do I write a coverletter/resume to highlight my accomplishments - which are mostly sales and management related - and still land at least an interview for a decent technical job?  Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank You

Well, you do write the cover letter as usual, listing your accomplishments, skills and refering to your actual contribution to the job you are seeking for, but your enyhance the so-called TRANSFERABLE SKILLS. Meaning the skills you had while being a salesman, skills which can be useful in the new domain as well:

Your resume will need to de-emphasize your work experience and showcase your tech-related credentials. Place your Education before Experience to emphasize your related studies. Here's a suggested layout:

Header (name, address, e-mail, phone)

Career Goal (make sure your IT objective is clear)

Qualifications Summary (highlight your tech credentials)

Education (list related courses, projects, etc.)

Technology Skills (bulleted list of specific programs you're knowledgeable or proficient in)

Work Experience (keep this brief as you're shifting careers; focus on any tech-related work, even if it's outside of your regular responsibilities)

Also, you may want to offer free or low-priced tech services to friends/family/charities to practice your craft and expand your knowledge. You can highlight special projects on your resume to show related experience.
