References

I am applying for a job which requires 3 professional references.  My current employer does not know that I am looking for another job.  Should I confide in those I work for to gain a reference of my current work?  This is my first major job since college, so I don't have many other references and this job would be most relevant to what I am applying for.
"Should I confide in those I work for to gain a reference of my current work?" Loose lips sink ships so unless you're absolutely sure, I'd skip it (besides, references normally aren't asked for).

rachelflavin, are you telling us that you are must supply the references with the application? That is unusual, would only expect to supply references very close to or after an offer.  If there is a way to stall on that request I would. You must take care in letting your current employer know that you are job hunting - its been known to backfire on job seekers.

Since this is your 1st job you will want to come away with at least some professional references; they don't have to be your supervisor/boss. If you have collaborated on projects then, some of those folks could be references.  You should establish a career-long habit of cultivating references. You do this by being a stellar performer; and a go-to team member. Quality work gets noticed. Then be sure you have set up a way to keep in contact - your own database of references. Be sure to give them everything they need to be able to be a good reference, i.e. job description, resume, points of emphasis. I have done that and it has been the difference between a good job offer and an outstanding one.

good luck to you!
