Resume after years of own business

I am seeking employment after running my own business for 25 years.  I got my MBA from a top 10 business school, earned my CPA and worked for eight years in public accounting and a Fortune 200 corporation.  I just saw this in one of the Monster advice columns "Experience more than 10 years old is irrelevant, because work haschanged so much," says Carleen MacKay, a practice leader at staffingfirm Spherion.  Not far from that was a comment that a ten year old degree was irrelevant.
What advice can you offer concerning:
How should I discuss my education and accounting experience in my resume?  Not only are the dates old, but my employers have both merged and changed names.  If I give the company names, there's no point in being coy about the dates.
Should I even bother applying to mid-level accounting jobs?  Will potential emloyers consider my experience irrelevant?  Of course, I did accounting for my own business, but it lacks those nice keywords like SEC, Annual Report, Supervisor, Manager, etc.  I am also frustrated that employers seem to require experience with specific tasks, and do not seem receptive to evidence of ability.
My resume has been on Monster for several months, and so far all I get is store manager and truck driver responses, so I know something's not right.
