Is it dumb to use an objective

I overheard people saying that "nobody" uses an objective on their resume anymore..Is this true? Is using an objective out-of-date now?

Kate

If you know what you're specifically interested in, you can use one.

It helps employers in making a match to a position. The only weakness is you may be limiting your opportunities when you use an objective. They will never be out-of-date (in fact due to the current trend in niche marketing, it may be more in style than ever before).

That is great to know thank you. Because I also heard that it "annoys" employers, although I wouldn't know why. But thanks again for your input.

I strongly believe in Objectives.

My personal (biased) opinion is that discouragement of Objectives is driven by lazy resume preparers.  When I ran my own resume service, I provided clients with three to five resumes, each one focused on a different kind of position, and each with its own Objective.

I have generally found that, with resumes without Objectives, it is harder to determine what kind of position is being applied for.
