Resume Advice

I have a long history as an electrician but only 1-1/2 years as a facility manager. I would prefer extending my career as an FM but having less than 2 years of experience might be causing me some trouble. I recently updated my resume and have only had a few hits. Is it too busy or sound too good to be true? Any advice on how to improve it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, hellobernie

The way your resume reads to me is as though you've got 25 years experience in facilities management, which isn't the case.  And here is where I think you're coming across to potential employers as a "liar."  Especially when they look at your employment history and see that you really have about 2 years experience.

So my biggest suggestion would be to modify things a bit by using a bulleted list to briefly tell an employer what you bring to the table.  For example,

  • 25 years of construction and electrical experience , including working as a Facilities Manager.
  • Managed and motivated teams to meet goals.
  • Long history of completing projects on-time.
  • Dedicated to maintaining high quality standards.

This way, you highlight your many years of experience in the field, de-emphasize the fact that you haven't been a Facilities Manager all that long, and aren't "lying."  Now the employer has the choice of going with someone who has lots and lots of industry experience and some facilities management vs. someone who may not have as much industry experience, but more facilities management.  So it becomes a "toss-up," and you still stand a good chance here.

Now if this approach doesn't work, then I think the problem is that you simply don't have enough facilities management under your belt.
