criminal background.....

Question for my "friend" who has a criminal background from 19 years ago and is having trouble finding a job, or even being considered for a job because of the question "Have you EVER been convicted of a crime".  Although the applications say this will not automatically bar you from employment, he finds this not to be the case.....  I suggested he mail a letter, some type of cover letter, explaining his past is exactly that, and that he has not been in any trouble since then, and he is a good, upstanding citizen now, family man, etc... anyone have any comments on how to help???  Thank you.

I applied to work at the Faith Rescue Mission after I graduated from Columbus State Community College.  I did not get the job because I did not want to get a criminal back ground check.  I just like to fool around learning how to use the computer on monster.  I do not feel that I will ever get a job that compensates for my degree.  I do not have a criminal background.  They let me out of a mental hospital on the condition that I get an education.  I got my education.  In seven years I will be able to claim a small social security retirement benifit.  I do not plan on getting a criminal background check when I retire at a rescue mission.  When I have more time, I will figure out where to submit my new resume.  It is the same old resume information modified to be scanned electronically.  I do not mind being a permanent temporary.  Everytime I start to figure out the boards on monster, monster changes their board system.  I am looking for the menu.
