How to Mention a Job from Long Ago

I was a homemaker in the 80s and 90s .  I then went back to school and earned my BA in 2002, and have been working as a paralegal since (currently unemployed).  My question concerns law and customer service.

Prior to being a homemaker/SAHM (1984), I held a position as the acting national manager of consumer relations/liability specialist for a major appliance company.  I do not usually mention it on a resume, as it was so long ago.  Rather, I list only the work I've done since 2002.

However, I have seen a few jobs that ask for customer service experience, and obviously this was a prominent position nationally and I'd like to bring it up as being relevant to those jobs, in addition to my  more current paralegal work.

My question:  Do I list it on the resume, where the focus will then be a gap from 1984 to 2002 (nothing wrong with being a SAHM; I just would prefer to keep the focus on more current work), OR is it preferable to mention it by way of  "additional info" in my cover letter?  Thanks!

1. Definitely mention it in your resume.

2. That said, I would advise against doing it in a chronological format.  That gives you two options: to do a functional resume, or to add a Significant Accomplishments section to your resume, before the Experience section.  Add in the accomplishments from the long-ago position, undated.  I'd recommend the second option.
I love your second option.  Thanks for the great idea...and Happy Easter!
