return to previous company after 10 mos.

I am helping a friend with a resume.  He is a relationship sales rep for a large corporation and left for a new job.  He was sold on this company, thought the grass would be greener and found out that it wasn't the job he thought it would be.  He tried it out for about 10 months, but there were some problems with the company, the job, the expectations and the pay/incentives.  He returned to the original company and has been back for 5 months.

1. What is the best way to list these two companies on his resume?

2. How long do you think he needs to stay at current company to build longevity (credibility) on his resume?

Thanks!

what i have done is for the job he came back to and was at originally list the original start date and list to "present"

depending on how much other experience he has would determine if he needs to list the 10mos job on the resume.  if so, make it small and at the bottom under a caption of "other experience".  make sure on the application that he lists all jobs.
