Census Questions after applying on line

Quick question. After applying for a job, i often come across those 2 questions about race and gender. I know they say these questions are not used as a hiring criteria, but it kind of makes me wonder a bit what they use them for. I know they say they use them for a population sample to see who has applied for the position, but is the employer told more than just the overall numbers? Is it best to list your demographics or just leave them blank?

Not to sound paranoid, but just curious

This question gets asked over and over - go to the Diversity board for some interesting discussions on this very topic.

Who knows what employers actually see.  But they should only see numbers and not your specifics.  Generally, you will be asked these same questions again when you are hired simply because they didn't get the answer during the application process.
