how to handle termination on resumeHi, I am hoping you can advise me as to the best way to handle termination from a job on my resume. I was at the company for 3 mths and was abruptly terminated for no good reason. My thought right now is too leave it on there becuase either way I would have to expain myself when I go on interviews. Is this the best way to go? Also when I do go on interviews how do I explain my termination without sounding negative toward the employer? An advice would be greatly appreciated! If the job is relevant to your job search, you can list it on your resume without the termination details. As far as explaining it in a cover letter, application or an interview goes, what does "...no good reason mean?" Were you given any reason? Can you call someone at that place to find out? Here's what you can do. If you were employed for a while at your previous job, leave this job off your resume. If you have to use it as a reference, then do NOT indicate you were fired. Terminations do not belong on a resume. That information will come out during the interview. More on this later. Once you get to the interview stage, wait until the interviewer asks you about your termination. Some employers ask you to fill out their application and somewhere it will ask you if you were terminated. If the interviewer asks about your termination, explain why you were fired and what you have learned from it. For example, I was fired after 17 years with the same company. I always told my interviewers I was fired because of differences with my new manager. I learned that not everyone will get along and sometimes it is best to part ways. The manager who fired me wanted to install his 'team' that was loyal to him. | |
