I Have the Experience, BUT....

I found a job posted yesterday that I have 4+ years experience in (their requirement is only 1 year experience).  However, the experience I have is with a former employer, and I have not worked there in 9 years.  How can I make this stand out on my resume and have the prospective employer feel comfortable in knowing that I still 'know my stuff' in this area?  PS:  This is the last work history entry on my resume.

The company advertising this position has a VERY GOOD track record.   This would be an incredible opportunity for me!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

So you haven't had paid work in nine years?

I recommend the following format:

Name/address/phone/email

Objective

Then either a Strengths or Significant Accomplishments section.  This will allow you to state right at the beginning of your resume, what you accomplished in the previous position.

After that your Work History, and then your Education.

However, that still leaves you with the problem of explaining the nine year gap.

Thanks for your advice..... I should have clarified that I DO have paid work history in those 9 years, including my current postion (I've had for ~ 2 years), plus owning/running my own business for 8 years.  There is an overlap of these 2 jobs + a 3rd job I had for 10 months (part-time 2nd job).  Hopefully, this makes sense.

I'm going to change my resume to the format you listed.  It basically says everything you did, but just in a different order.

Thanks again!

If you've been steadily employed during those nine years (switching fields for instance), then it's not really a problem.  But if you weren't working during that time, then the question becomes why, and you should have a legitimate reason for it.

Now as far as your resume goes, you can focus attention on your years of experience in the "skills" section, or whatever you happen to call it.  This way, the job isn't just buried behind others in the work history section.  And that skills section should be what the employer sees first.
