Letter of RecomondationIn regards to Letters of Recommendation, do they become outdated? I collected letters in July 2005. Over 17 months ago my department was prepared to be dissolved. The word is finally here and I will be laid off in March. So, having no idea it would take so long I had begun to collect letters in July 2005. Is a prospective employer still interested in what was said about me a year ago? Is there an industry standard for how long a letter can be used for? As long as the same people are also open to being contacted directly you should be good to go, I have letters going back 10 years and more. Some of my references are still really part of my professional network we have worked together more recently again and we continue to work in different capacities. It really depends upon the industry and the role that you are in and the role that your reference is in.
I hope they are interested. My Letter of Recommendation is from the President/CEO of the company that down sized me in May
Yes, letters eventually get outdated because employers want to know about your recent accomplishments. Also, your letters should be relevant to your current goal, so older letters that are relevant will have more impact than a more recent letter that focuses on unrelated skills or experience. Your letters from July 2005 should be just fine! | |
