How to account for time gapHello, I am wondering how to account for a gap in work history on a resume. I stayed home to take care of my kids for fours years. I have been back to work for nearly two years now, but in sixty days, my company is closing. I currently have a chronological resume, showing a gap of 4 years. Can I leave that in and just wait to be asked about it or do I need to change my resume completely? I am very proud of the years I spent taking care of my family and know that I can put a positive spin on those years if/when asked. Just so you know, I am a Supervisor. I Supervised in a call center for 5 years before I quit working. For the last 20 months, I have been Supervising data entry production employees. Any ideas? Thanks, Amy
I think you should address the "gap" in your cover letter because employers will be wondering about those four years. Do you have other activities you can use to cover the gap in your resume? Examples include volunteer work, continuing education (courses, seminars, conferences, anything career related), freelance projects, etc. Here's an article on the topic that might be helpful: Resume Tips for Full-Time Parents Returning to Work I'm sorry to hear that your company is closing, and I wish you good luck in your search. I don't think your time off will be a big deal - and you have two years of recent work history to show. Best wishes, Kim Isaacs The Resume Expert | |
