How many years should my resume show
I am trying to update my resume. It currently is going back 10 years, which makes the resume in my view look way to long. I want to tighten it up but now sure how far back I need to go. Any help would be greatly aprectiated!
Hi Melowen, Most employers are interested in your recent accomplishments, so focusing on the last ten to fifteen years is a good rule of thumb. If your resume seems too long, you could focus on the last five years or so and cut down on the space you use for earlier positions. Of course, this would not be the best strategy if you're trying to return to an early career, so there's no right or wrong way to handle this -- you've got to do what works best for you and your work history. Best wishes, Kim Isaacs The Resume Expert Well...the truth is that if you're let's say 40 and you want to build up your resume, you will definitely have a lot of things to mention in there so 10 to 15 is a reasonable period to go back with. BUT. If the nature of the job you are seeking for asks for some skills or for some degree you have a chieved let's say 20 years ago, you should mention that without a problem.
