Nephew as InternI am actually going to post this to other sections of the forum boards, but I want to cover all bases in case someone from this section doesn't go into the others. One of the founders of the company I work at has three daughters and two sons. Two of those daughters and one of the sons decided to not follow in dad's footsteps and did not go to law school. One of the daughters and the son went on to become architects. They worked in different firms and sometimes competed against each other when it came to getting their design bought by someone who wanted to build whatever. They both opened up their own firms and kept up their competing ways and they both have made something of a name for themselves within the architectural/planning circle. A little over two years ago they merged their businesses and have grown expidentially. They have so much work nationally that they have opened a couple of branches in each time zone. They now want to open another one in a town about 1/2 hour drive from here. They have their location and it is to be built out by October. The two of them love to fool around with web design and for the last year have all but dropped their pencils in favor of this medium. What they would like to do is hire some people who know what they are doing to work at that branch but also hire some college kids who are taking web design, graphics or some related computer based courses and hire them as part time help with a tuition reimbursement plan of 35% total annual tuition. After three months, they plan to run a contest for just these students. The contest details are still in the works, but it is roughly this: The students will each come up with a web-based design for a new office building. Their will be specific parameters that each will need to follow in terms of feet per office space and how much frou-frou vs. functional stuff. The winner if the contest is the student whose design is picked by the person who is building the office building. The prize will be an 80% tuition reimbursement plus a job at the firm for one year after graduation. The major catch in my case is that relatives of employees are not allowed to participate in the contest but are allowed to apply as part time help and take advantage of the tuition reimbursement. My nephew is entering college in September and his major is web design and graphic arts. He would like to work at this firm but do you really think it is fair that he is not allowed to participate in the contest just because he is my nephew? And, yes, he lives with me. And, no, I have absolutely no idea what the heck a web based design is supposed to look like let alone have the knowledge to help him with it. I would say your nephew is not eligible sorry - I know that isn' t what you want to hear but the rules are rules and he is related. Hopefully he can get a job at least. Good luck to him and keep us posted !! | |
