From Finance to Marketing... HelpHello, I recently graduated from college with a Finance degree. I was 2 courses shy of double-majoring with a Marketing degree as well. About a month after college I got a job at a not-for-profit in New York City as a Junior Financial Analyst. I've been there almost half a year and have discovered that a Finance/Accounting position is just not for me. I don't want to sit behind a desk 40 hours a week for the next 40 years of my life staring at spreadsheets. So for the past 2 months I've been applying to marketing jobs and other, more interesting sounding finance jobs (the commute to the city is too much for me), but haven't really gotten a bite. During high school and college I worked at a children's entertainment center where we also held corporate events and I feel like that would be something I could sink my teeth into (event coordinator, etc.) I'm looking for some clear-cut advice on how to move from the Finance industry into a Marketing position. I can't really afford to go back to school just yet and I would really like to be in a position where I can move around and interact with people as well as brainstorm and use my creative side (NOT a sales position or a position where most of my salary comes from commission.) I also have a Business Information Systems minor, in case that information is relevent. Thank you very much for any help offered. It is VERY hard to get into Marketing, even with a Marketing major and internships. If you want marketing, you may have to look at Admin Assistant in the Marketing department. But it sounds to me like you don' t want Marketing per se, but rather something like event coordinator. Have a look at non-profits, hotels, catering companies, etc. Once you get your foot in that door you can eventually pick and choose if you want to do that for corporations, non-profits, weddings, whatever. Many independent companies in this field are small one or two man offices so you' ll have to hunt around a lot. Also, look at Finance in non-profits. You might not feel so locked in a desk if you know that your finance job has a real cause and effect impact on someone' s life. Things like credit counselor or financial planner may give you the people interaction and ability to be creative with finances that would tie things together for you. | |
