Career Tips

A bad move...

I'm looking for a little advice here folks.  I left a great job and career(10 years) a year ago  and moved my family cross country for an opportunity that was presented to me.  It took me the better part of a year to realize that I had been completely bamboozled and that the "opportunity" was smoke and mirrors. The person that sold me on the move is a liar and a thief.  I'm sure that he will be in jail  as soon as the forensic accountant is done with him.  I left this situation over a month ago and I have yet to have an interview although I have been trying very hard to find work. Everything is at risk. House, cars, everything.

The advice?  How do I explain this last job?  I worked very hard for this charlatan for an entire year of my life. I can't use him as a reference as I'm suing him to recover all that was promised and never delivered.  Do I remove the whole nightmare from my resume and tell prospective employers that I was in a cave for a year?  I know honesty is the best policy but this was such a major mistake on my part. Lesson learned...check the books and finances and make sure the company is sound...especially a small business looking for VC help.

I need an outside fresh perspective on this. Thanks to all!

Unless this subject is brought up during the interview process, do not mention that your previous employer was a thief because it does not matter to the hiring manager. What matters is your employment experience. Expound on the fact that you were hired for a position. But you can state that the position was not as represented during your initial interview IF the interviewer asks only.

Thanks! Any advice on the whole reference process if they want to call this person?  My prior references are impeccable but this experience was horrendous.
