Education
I want to get a good, respectable, well paying job, but I don't have a college degree. I'm great at what I do, have experience and some college but it seems everyone wants you to have a degree! Is a degree REALLY relevant in the photography world? Or do I satnd a chance of getting what I want?
Yes, a degree is REALLY relevant everywhere but yes, you stand a CHANCE of getting in some where without it. It will be much harder without it and it will keep you from advancing. This issue is going to rear its ugly head throughout your career so why not just take care of it and move on? Photography is a hobby of mine and I used to shoot professionally in the 1980s and 1990s. You do not need a degree in photography BUT most of the leading photographers you see who shoot weddings, album covers and so forth do acquire a Masters in Photography from the Professional Photographers of America (PPofA). Unless you are awfully lucky to be in the right spot at the right time, I would get your degree in fine arts/photography. I specialized in sports (Amateur and Professional) but the job was cyclical. I still do some freelance assignments today BUT I do not rely on it as my bread and butter. I also know a lot of professional photographers who are making $100,000 to $200,000 and they do not have college degrees. What they do have is the clientele. You have to establish your reputation and demonstrate what sets you apart from the other average photographers out there. Good Luck! | |
