May NOT contact

In what situations is it appropriate for me to not check the "may we contact this employer?" box?

I had two jobs that were of fairly short duration, and while I left on good terms, I was a bit naive and neglected to ask if I could use them as references in future jobs.  Should I just put the names/numbers of my supervisors, or should I just ask them not to contact the employers and risk them thinking I was a horrible employee?

I you are going to list those particular employers on a resume or application and do not consent for them to be contacted, you do take the risk of the potential new employer thinking that you are a poor risk or have something to hide. If you leave it blank as to whether they can be contacted, that may be an oversight on your part and you may be asked why you left it blank. If you check yes, then it says you have nothing to hide and, besides, you  have no burnt bridges with your past employers so, to your knowledge, they can't say anything negative.

You could contact them at this point and let them know that you are interviewing for another position and ask if they would mind being put as references.

OR, you could have someone else (friend or relative) contact them pretending to be someone interested in you for a job and ask for a reference.

I have a similar question. A lot of jobs I've had were years ago and I have no contact information...I don't even know if the same supervisors are working there or not. When I get to the contact question for these jobs, I just leave it blank (When applying electronically, on some web sites checking a box is optional)

Is that a good option or no?

Say yes except for your current employer.  Call those others and ask what they' d say.  If you don' t have the specific supervisors anymore, give the main HR number.  Don' t create a HUGE red flag where none exists!
