Jury summons while job hunting
I am currently a full-time student pursuing both internships andregular jobs for this summer. I received a summons to serve on ajury while school is still in session. My understanding is that Ican postpone the date of service exactly once. My presumptionwould be that I would ask to postpone to the end of the quarter, butthere is also the problem of what should happen if I should get anoffer for a job for which the required start date falls into therevised jury duty period. Is there a possibility that I could beforced to turn down a job for this reason? No..... there is not reason to turned down a job! I recommend you tocheck your state for laws on this process. I would call and use Googleon your hometown to further your information on what your legal rightsare. I just was released from Jury Duty (I was not selected as one of the 12 jurors or alernates). If your county is like mine, you will have to call in the Friday before you start your service. You will be told to report to the Court. From there, you may be selected to a panel. If you are selected, the Judge will ask if you will have any hardships. Explain to him or her that you are a student seeking a job and it is the only means of your support and that you do not receive any help from your parents. The judge will then ask the Petitoner (District Attorney or Plaintive attorney) and the Respondent (Defendant) attorney if they have any objections to letting you go. You might have your jury duty postponed for a later time. We had some 100 prospective jurors. Forty-eight were dismissed for hardship, not understanding English, hearing and paid vacations they could not get out of. At the end of the day, we (the ones that were not selected) were dismissed from further service. For one thing, just because you receive a jury summons doesn' t mean you' re on the jury. It' s more likely as not that you won' t be--more than half of people responding to a jury duty summons don' t get selected after all.
My jury service has now been rescheduled to June 13. That is about a week after the quarter ends. My question now is, what can I give as an availability date foremployment? When would I need to tell a (prospective) employerabout the jury service? | |
