Career Tips

Your Own Business

A  couple of things, plus some venting on the side.

I'm currently in the process of searching for a job, of which I've gotten zero replies from all I've applied. I've recently gotten fired from a job which paid monthly but of which my boss stated "You don't pay attention to detail" but gave me all of (literally) two days to work on such a flaw. He said to use him as a reference, which I obliged him by, stating "I won't give you a bad rep" but I'm afraid it won't make much of a difference since I was only at that job for three weeks.

Now, I'm an entry level worker but I know I don't suck that much. I'm not saying I didn't make any mistakes, but I really could've used the experience to help get me somewhere else, (i.e., I could've fixed the problems I had given more time). Injustices aside, I've tried the keyword formula dozen of times, if not everytime, as well as other Monster.com-esque sites and have gotten next to no calls with even fewer interviews. I suppose I should post my resume so you guys can take a look at it even though I base it off my largely successful older cousin.

I can't move without a car, I got school loans to pay... the list goes on. But to the main event, since it's a bit hard to get a job in my field, I wanted to try and make some cash myself. I'm an animator/illustrator and I wanted to make my own animation company but I don't know the first thing about entrepreneurship. I also know  that I need some kind of day job in order to finance such a venture. Can anyone help a struggling animator trapped in a world where they are too experienced for Blockbuster Video but too amateur for their career choice?

Check your local free weekly paper, perhaps? Maybe put up a sign offering freelance illustration services at the local coffeehouse (not Starbucks) or wherever arty types hang out in your town.

I'm not an artist myself, and I'm sure that someone will jump on my rear telling me how stupid I am suggesting those things, but that's what pops in my head.

Also, and I don't know where you are, but in my neck of the woods, everyone's hiring. I went to a job fair and had the Cracker Barrel reps almost wrestle me to the ground in hope that I would fill out their application. Of course, they're cruddy service jobs, but hey, some cruddy service jobs beat unemployment and they pay the bills.

You sound like a young Walt Disney! Walt Disney is looking for for animators but you have to be good. They usually get their animators from a college Disney helped develop in Valencia, California. I heard they are looked for old school animators (not computer generated, aka, Pixar).

I, too, waited almost two years before getting hired at my dream job. Of course, I almost lost my home and was nearly broke by the time I got hired with my current company. Hang in there because someone is looking for your services.
