Send More Info After initial App

Earlier this week I responded to an ad I found online for a job that looks really, really good... something I really would like at an organization I' ve long respected. I emailed my resume and cover letter and got a response saying they would review my app and get back to me, etc., etc., etc.

Would it hurt or help my chances if I snail-mailed a hardcopy of my cover letter and resume along with a few articles I' ve written for trade mags over the years with a note along the lines that I am really interested in the position and would like to include the attached info for your consideration?

I would bet anything that the answer you received was an automatic response that all applicants recieve. Many companys program their website to send this to those who have submitted their resumes and expressed interest in the company. Unfortunately, I don't think this means that your information is neccesarily going to be viewed by the correct people.

Also what happens many times with programs is that there are certain keywords that need to be input(ted) and only those people who happen to have matching keywords within their resumes and/or cover letters will actually be brought to the forefront.

There is no harm in sending your hard copy resume and letter of interest to the HR department of this company. At the very worst, they will ignore you completely and at the very best, they will seek out your resume within the computer.

I wouldn' t.  Most employers don' t want to see all that stuff unless they' re ready to interview you.  You can bring it with you then.  Most government employers specifically tell you not to attach anything else.
