Searching for a new job while in one

Hello,

Often, I read messages about how people have searched for a new job while still employed full-time in their current position but wanting to leave it. I can imagine this being a tricky balancing act especially if they don't want anyone like their employer knowing they are looking for a new job until they actually nab one.

My question is, what is the best way to proceed in a situation like this? What if your employer is unreasonable about taking a day off when you have an interview scheduled with that new job you want to transfer into? How do you 'get away with it'?

Dear SV1230,

I'm currently in the situation you've described. I'm finding that many companies will initially conduct an interview over the phone lasting anywhere from 20-25 minutes. I will step out for a cup of coffee and have even conducted these interviews in the stairwell on another floor in my office building. I'm also finding that companies are willing to interview me at 6:00PM realizing that they need to be flexible and respect my time and job security.
