What am I doing wrongHey everyone. Maybe someone has some good advise??? I have been looking for work (engineer, management level) for almost two years now. I got downsized but I am working as a contractor so I am not desperate. I just want a direct position. Recruiters are painful. most of them want to chat with you for 45+ minutes about nothing, then I hear nothing from them. But I do get to know about their kids, car, house, etc, all while my contract house is billing the client company by the hour! Most of them shut it down at 5pm and go home. It has gotten so bad that I only list my e-mail address so I can filter out the time wasters. I have networked until the cows have come home. Some people I have talked to 2-5 times, some job activity but the money isn't there (looks like I got friends in low places). My resume is on a number of job boards, a couple of nibbles in my salary range. BUT I have won the lottery! sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. I have had people look at my resume, it is up there with comparable people in the salary I am looking at. I am contemplating a next step, has anyone tried those pay jobsites like theladders.com or any others? Any success? I ran across this article, check it out: http://finance.yahoo.com/career-work/article/103311/In-Hunt-for-High-Pay-Be-Specific How is it that some six figure jobseekers land a job in 3-6 months? Any other suggestions? Getting a low pay engineering job is easy, the higher pay jobs seem to be much harder. I just don't feel like I am getting my resume in front of the right people, at least not the ones who pay...
The only advice that I can offer you is to be very careful about the for-fee services such as "The Ladders". I have been watching them from a distance over the course of my own 8-month job search, and I see a lot of very old job postings among those they advertise. I would, however, consider taking advantage of resources available to you, often at no charge, to review/revise your reume and cover letters, etc. I wish you the very best.
I have to disagree with Scott on this one. I also am in Engineering management, and I used TheLadders among some other job boards. i found a job in about 2-3 months without really trying all that hard (sorry, not trying to rub it in, it's just the truth). I was able to get a number of interviews and a couple of offers. The job I settled on I found through theLadders (although my new employer actually offered me a better job than they had advertised). The nice thing about theLadders was that it only has six-figure jobs (in theory at least). I didn't want to waste my time with anyjob that wasn't at least six-figures so I knew applying to any job there was at least that. I have a website where I talk about jobs and money. I will probably talk about my job search relatively soon and how I met with success. Read it, and if you have questions, feel free to ask them there.
