Getting back into finance....Help Please

I worked for a couple years as a Business and Planning Analyst for Microsoft.(2001 - 2003)

In 2003, I took over a couple of small businesses and I've been running them until now.

I'm looking to return to finance, even at entry level.

Would you consider this a major career change and how difficult do youthink it will be to get in as an entry level finance or businessanalyst at almost 32 years of age?

Thanks,
It should be quite easy for you to get into finance.

There are several things you can do:

Focus your Resume heavily on your financial  responsibilities whilst managing your small businesses.

Tailor your Resume to each finance vacancy you apply for.

Apply to small and large firms looking for Finance Assistants or any junior finance roles and set about gaining a recognised financial qualification.

Register with as many financial recruitment specialist agencies as possible as they will all have junior finance roles they are desperate to fill.

Good luck

Do you think it's absolutely necessary that I get some sort of financial qualification?

While I worked at Microsoft as a financial analyst for a couple years, albeit 6 years ago, it was a mid-level finance role, although during the past 6 years, I've been a small business owner

Also, I graduated in 2001 with a BA in Business and MIS. I've also completed a couple professional certification programs in Infiormation security and database managementat from UCLA in 2006

If you are intending to carve out a career in Finance it would always be to your long-term advantage to have an additional well recognised qualification.

I am not suggesting you study for it now.  Wait until you are working in a finance focused role and then explore ways to gain any additional qualification that will be relevant to your long term professional success.

Good luck.

Do you think being 32 will hurt me in getting back in to finance? Do think employers will be hesitant to hire someone may age for an entry level position?

I read, I believe it was on here, that if you enroll in a course relevant to the industry in which you are applying, you can then state that you are enrolled in whatever college heading to your degree in that subject and that it will go a long way in showing the potential employer that you are seriously interested in that field. While that may be true, you will need to actually attend the course to avoid being dropped by the educational insuitution and dropped out of consideration by the potential employer when they contact the school. So, if money is tight, you may have to hold off on that and hope that verbally expressing your intentions will be sufficient. To that end, you could gather a list of courses that are relevant to the position and state that you would like to register for them as soon as you are able.

At 32, you are still young enough to be conidered a "baby" in the business world when changing careers is the issue. You could consider a position as an assistant financial analyst which would be entry level but would make use of the skills you gained at Microsoft.
