After Bankruptcy...trying to find a jobI lost my job at a coprporation. I filed chapter 13= 2 years ago and almost done with monthly payback payments. I am scared/frustrated because it is going on 4 months...jobless. I have applied to many different types of jobs. Any help would be appreciated. Gosh, how frustrating - do dispair.
If you are applying for lots of jobs and not getting any responses you may need to look at your Resume to help you secure a job. Try registering for temporary work with lots of recrruitment agencies as you are not credit checked until you are offered a permanent job. Temping is a great way to earn money in the short term whilst providing you with a fantastic oave them hire opportunity to work for a trusted employer who you can explain your situation to and hire you direct. Good Luck Portion of post does not conform to Monster TOU Thanks SueEllen, I found your reply very interesting. I am still unsure as to what perspective employers look at before they consider an applicant. What does a background involve? I did lots of online searching and found that employers won't state it (of course) but will find bankruptcy grounds to not hire me. I did get hired- showed up for a week and then got let go. Talk about a sick feeling. A shame really. I did look at my accounts at Monster, HotJobs, etc and I have "Temp" also checked (and P/T) I am knowledged and enjoy working. I am still filling out online applications and sometimes I feel the online experience is a huge black hole- not knowing if my resume arrives to the employer gets me speculating. I have also gone online to many companies in my area (Pittsburgh) and applied directly to them. And I wait. I don't want to appear too eager, even to the lower end jobs I applied to ( dry cleaners, etc...) Keep you posted! I will persevere*
LRB201 - Keep up the good work. I am sure it will not be long before you find your dream job.
Apply to as many jobs as possible to have a variety of options. Each job you apply for - you must always remember to tailor your Resume to the job so that a Recruiter will see instantly that you match what they are looking for. Dont worry too much about backgroun checks - employers usually pay critical attention to this if you are to be working in their accounts department. Good luck and let me know how you get on. Portion of post does not conform to Monster TOU When checking an individuals background, an employer looks at criminal history, work ethic (attendance, efficiency, mult-task, truth in listed skills, etc) credit. A Felony arrest and conviction will definately slow your chances of being hired for a position but does not negate an interview or consideration. Lying about an arrest or conviction, felony or misdemeanor, will get you dropped like a burning coal from a bar-b-que. Felony drug and drinking arrests and convictions are a certainty for non-hire if the job involves the usage of heavy machinery and/or driving company owned vehicles. Also, for any position where you would be working with children. A bad reference from a past or current employer will drop you several points but is not the end all of possible hire. Competent and respectable employers will take every aspect into consideration. Your credit check will yield the most damage if you are applying for jobs that are financial in nature. CPA, Accountant, Investments, Banking and others of this type. Everything that is checked goes to your character and everybody reads it differently. Just because you commited armed robbery 15 years ago, went to prison, are on probation doesn't mean that you will do this again or that you are a bad person. It could mean that. But it could also mean that you made an error in judgement and have learned your lesson. Thanks Kelly...Your message has given me more insight as to how to understand and follow the hiring process. I just need to get to the next step- where an employer meets me, sees what I can offer for the company and then go from there. Thanks* I went through bankruptcy 5 years ago when my husband became ill and could not longer work. I just cried when I filed those papers. If I get the interview, I just come out and let the company know up front about the bankruptcy and explain why. I had a recruiter call me this week about a job and we went over my skills, all my experience, etc. While speaking with her I told her right out that I was 62 and just wanted her too know. By gosh, I got a an interview set for next week. I still can't believe it. So stay positive.
Hello Car J. Thanks for the response. I feel for you! And know the position you are in. I just don't know what's going to happen to my family if something better doesn't transpire. I did get P/T with UPS and I am a drivers asst. $8.50 an hour ALOT of walking/steps and I am 58. I wait for the early 7 AM phone call telling me to report and meet the driver for 10.00AM...and work until 3.30PM. My knees ache. BUT it is a job. The job I lost was a planner/ scheduler/ supply chain position that I loved. Good Luck to you, I have included you in my prayers. Hi Kelly, I again was disappointed. I was phoned last week by a recruiter, then an HR representive phoned me and we did an "over the phone" interview. I was told I got ta job with a big corporation and wouldn't be starting until December 7th. (friday). I had a great weekend. But, today I got THE phone call that the company rescinded the offer. I actually had this happen a month ago- company hired me-and after 5 days work-they let me go. It hurts. Now, I am really feeling it. Scared mostly. My adult children tell me possibly it is my age. 58- but I can offer any company my years of experience, I think it is the bankruptcy, that is the black mark. I don't know. I don't know where to go from here. I have my wife worried and the UPS job is P/T and only paying 8.50 hourly. Thanks for any advice... I guess there is always the possibility of age discrimination working against you, but there is no way to fully identify that. Unfortunately conditional employment happens all the time and it really isn't fair. An employer gets the hopes up of a job seeker and then dashes it when the offer is rescinded or the "now" employee is let go. Contact this latest disappointment and request the reason for offer to be rescinded. Knowing, of course, that the reason you are told will not be your age. It may not be the bankruptcy issue at all. Maybe one of your previous employers said something adverse that the prospective employer took to heart. Double check all your entries on applications to make sure that the boxes you checked your appropriate and didn't lead to an unpleasant surprise as far as your background check results. This question may not be my business, but why are the driver's assistant? Could you apply to be a driver instead? More money. How about a dockside job? Loading the packages into the trucks or working as a dispatcher? | |
