Handing Job Offer While Interviewing

I'm currently a temp worker with an open ended contract, I've been in this position for a few years now.  I have two interviews coming up, the first is a second interview for a local company tomorrow, the second is an interview for a county job next tuesday.  When I had my first interview with the local company they said they would get to me in a few weeks, and then called me the next week.  While I'm pleased that I am up for the second interview, I'm a little concerned about what to do if I'm offered a job before I even get a chance to interview with the county.  I know that the county job will pay better and have better benefits, but I might not even have a chance at it.

I guess I'm just seeking advice, and wondering what my ethical options are.

It isn't a nice saying, but....Don't count your chickens before they hatch. Going on a second interview is a good thing. It means they liked you over others. However, it still doesn't mean that you are hired. There may be three, four, five or more going back to the second interview and there is still that chance that someone else may be picked.

Go to the interview, do a wonderful job, send them the thank you and if they call you on Friday or Monday, you are in great shape. Ask them when they need you to start. Something tells me that they aren't going to ask for you to start on Monday. They may need time to send in a request for computer access, the person who you are replacing may still need to be told. A myriad of reasons why you can put off starting for a week.

If they do say to start on Monday, you can let them know of a prior commitment for Tuesday and ask if you can start on Wednesday.

BIG CONGRATULATIONS - this is great news.  If the company requested to see you back for a second it is extremely positive and means that they are very interestedin hiring you.

If you are offered the job - accept it verbally and go on your County interview and see how you get on.

When you have all the offers in your hand - you will then be in a position to Pick, Choose  & Refuse.

Think long and hard about your long term future before formally accepting a job in writing.

By verbally accepting you are leaving your options open.

Good luck.

I disagree. I think you should ask for some time to think the first offer over so as to "buy time" then check with company #2 to see if they are going to give you an offer. Verbal agreements, while harder to prove in court, are just as binding as written ones.  I feel like you may be burning a bridge if you accept then turn down offer #1. Just my opinion.
