Lay Off 7 MonthsI was laid off in April, well they wanted to fire me but laid me off instead with severance and my vacation. Such kindness. I worked there for 7 months. I was told to give the corporate number for any job reference as they would only verify dates and salary and reason for my dismissal which in their records is "Laid Off." Ok, it's November and I still am not working. I decided to take a few months off April-August and just finished my unemployement as of this week. Question: Aren't the resumes I send out going to wonder why after 8 months I'm not working? It's a long gap for unemployment but I needed a well deserved break. Would you consider my gap a detriment to my search? If asked why it's been so long what do I say "I needed a break from work"? and just started looking again? And my working there for only 7 months isn't very long should I even bother placing it on my resume? Any advide would be welcomed. Hello, I just read your post today. I do not know if you have located work any where. You asked what are you supposed to say to prospective employers? Well I had a 6 month gap when I was looking for employment. I had a job where the didnt lay me off but forced me to voluntarily to resign. Well when I went out putting applications out, this is what I told them. I said that I had worked for 9 months for this company and that I voluntarily resigned because they were cutting my hours and were not paying me enough. As far as the gap of 6 months before getting a job.,..,i just told the truth....i said i have been diligently putting applications and resumes out in the workforce and have been called in for interviews but no one has hired me yet. Also sell yourself....meaning tell the employer all your accomplishments and what you are good at and a big part of it.....keep eye contact.....employers like that. Hope this helps. Diane
I have been a retail manager for many yrs with many company's and if I was interveiwing somebody whose hours at their last job had been cut quite a bit, that would be a red flag that it's possible they werent the best players on their previous employers team. For key players management will ALWAYS find hrs, even if it means cutting down less valuable players hrs.
Diane: I liked what you had to say. I had an issue like that at a previous job. They were cutting my hours to two days per week, so I voluntarily resigned and signed up with a temp agency. I also think telling the truth is better than lying. I had also been sending out resumes and getting several interviews, but had not been hired. As far as the person who said they worked several retail jobs - well, it is quite different in the retail world than the corporate business world. When the corporate business world wants to cut you, they cut you no matter how wonderful you may be. | |
