moving to the usa
Hi, i am currently a british citzen who wants to move to the USA preferably the south. I work as an avionics engineer with the british military i am trying to find companies that may be help to find me employment as well as the process involved in obtaing a visa etc. So any advice on how to do it, names or companies anything really would be very appreciated!!!
The consulate in your area, either American or British, should be able to give you better information on how to obtain a VISA than anybody here could. (unless, they went through the same deal). If you want to locate a company within America who will hire you and provide you with a sponsorship for a work VISA, then you may be in a tougher situation than you may want to be in. If you can do the exact same thing that any amount of other people who are already American citizens can do, companies will opt for the American citizen for cost effectiveness and less paperwork. But, then again, the same is said of Americans who want to go overseas to find employment. If there are people who are already citizens of that country, they will take priority. Still, check out the consulates and search the boards for the areas you want to move to and send feelers to the companies who you see as potentially viable employers requesting any information they can give to you about the possibility of being employed there and their policy about sponsorship. Some of the boards you can use are:

You're going to have to do some research first. Start out with some serious surfing to determine what companies do the sort of work you do. I believe most of them are headquartered in California and Washington State (west coast) versus the South, however, there might be some companies in Texas that support NASA that might apply. In order to get a work visa, you have to be able to do something that someone here either cannot or will not. Since avionics is a speciality high-tech field, this might work out if you're at a high enough level or do a very specialized work. If you don't have a degree, it probably won't happen but if you've got a lot of solid experience you might be able to overcome even that obstacle. Once you find the right companies to apply to (Boeing, McDonald-Douglas, Honeywell, Lockheed, Hughes, Gulfstream come to mind)... then you need to search their website for openings that you might apply for. In your cover letter you need to say that you're looking for sponsorship because if they're not interested in doing that, you don't want to waste everyone's time. Once someone decides to hire you, the company then applies for a H1B visa for you and if there are any available and if your job qualifies, you're in.
