Getting NoticedI am a Marketing Director in the publishing industry with 4 years as a Director and 10+ previous years Marketing Experience. I am considering changing industries and getting a Marketing Director position in a very competitive industry. I want to get myself noticed but while what I am considering doing is unique and creative, I do not want to come off as amateurish. For instance one of the companies I am wanting to break into is Wells Fargo. I have sent a resume but not gotten anywhere, and I am not getting response back from their HR. I was considering sending my resume again, but this time sending it to HR and also the head of the Department with the position opening but this time sending it FEDEX and including to each of them a model covered wagon (their corporate branding mark), Now by sending via FEDEX it will reach the right area and almost guarantees it will be opened and seen, and the model definitely differentiates my resume from any other sent. What is your feelings on this type of approach in sending something with the resume and cover letter that portrays the brand and will differentiate me and my credentials? Covered wagon? That is cheesy. That covered wagon will be remembered but you won't be. Wells Fargo probably has 100s of applicants and resumes to sort through. Your best bet is to find a person at Wells Fargo that does the hiring and call them direct and ask for an interview.
I agree with OC. The stage coach is a really bad idea. Wells Fargo has already copyrighted their version of it. So why reinvent the wheel? I think the FedEx idea might not achieve what you want it to. You can apply online at the Wells Fargo website for any position in the company. That might be their preferred way of hearing from applicants and varying from that might not really help you. Good luck.
Timing may be part of your problem too. Most big banks are not hiring right now. Have you read the news about the Mortgage market? That's having a big impact all over banks, even if their other divisions are doing well. Banks (especially very old established ones like Wells and BofA) are by nature very conservative so they're scaling back right now instead of expanding. And your area would be marketing. How do you plan to market in this environment? You'll have to answer that question. I doubt that anything goofy, creative or what have you is going to help. Your resume is going to either get you in the door or not. You might want to really have a serious look at your resume and make sure it really shows ACCOMPLISHMENTS and things that can be quantified. Good luck! Tess
