Career Tips

Keep it in perspective

I wanted to share something that I keep in mind as I read through job postings: The skills advertised for a job may be the skill set of the last person who held the job, or even what the perfect candidate ever might look like. Most people who get hired don't have all the skills that are supposedly "must haves" on the job description. A company waiting to find the perfect person to hire may find themselves hiring no one.

Consider this list of "must haves" for a job that I"ve seen advertised for months now:

Min of 8 years exp in the A/V design/integration.
5 years exp in IT
5 years exp in adult/collegiate instruction
Degree in electrical engineering
Vendor certifications, such as CTS-D or I, MCSE, CCNA with transcripts required.

HA! Are they serious? This person would have needed to be at work in exaclty these areas for the last 20 years of their life to fill all of the "must haves" for this job. So laugh when you see these, and then apply for them if you have some of the requirements. You'll either find that a) the company is being totally unrealistic or b) they may have written a poor job description and would love to meet someone like you.

Good luck to all!
