Company Confidential

Any suggestions on how to write a cover letter when the company name/contact information is listed as "company confidential?"  Many of the job postings mention the job title and industry, but do not give the name of the company and thus make it impossible to tailor the cover letter to that company and put a proper address on the letter.  Any suggestions?

Jen,

Sucks don't it and seems to be more and more of it happening. My fear is that it is a phishing expedition more or less and am a little questioning of that. Frankly I think it shouldn't be allowed on boards, but hey who am I?

I have been successful several times by looking at the e-mail address for information after the  "@" and glean info from it, then cut/ paste to search engine and see what pops. You may get the company and go from there. Call them, tell them that a friend gave you information on that company and if it was correct that they were looking for XXXXXX, and would like to submit your resume for consideration....

That way you know who its for....

Does that help?

Thanks for the tip.  I have actually done that a lot -- used the email address to discover the company.  However this particular job post is making it especially difficult, it is a gmail email account and the letters/numbers before the @ don't formulate a name to address it to either.  I hadn't thought about it being a phishing scam before, I guess I figured they wanted to protect their company emails from spam, but maybe I should be more wary of a job posting not using a professional email address.

Thanks!

Companies who list themselves as "company confidential" do so for two reasons:

  1. Because they don't want it known to the general public they are hiring because they will have all sorts of freaks and inappropriate applicants contacting them
  2. If the name is kept out of the advertisement a SERIOUS job seeker will pick out the pertinent hints inside the advertisement and research them to find out the company instead of just sending in a generic form letter and resume and hoping that themere fact they applied will impress the company

In my opinion, a company who uses gmail, hotmail, yahoo or any of the other generic email addresses are not on the up and up.

To me, "company confidential" means it was placed by a temp agency who are trying to keep you from applying directly to their client. Could also be a phishing scam. I say pass on it.
