Relocate...AGAINHello, All. As always, I want to thank everyone in advance for reading and responding. I moved from the Washington DC/Maryland area to the Atlanta, GA area over a few months ago to be closer to my family and eventually buy a home (cost of living was too high in DC/MD). Plus, I had just had my heart broken and thought this would be a fresh start. I am educated, worked in the federal government and 27 years old. I have not found a job as of yet, and I'm getting very nervous. I traveled several times before I moved to Atlanta for interviews with major companies and thought I had a job secured. It was very stressful and costly for these interviews. So I thought moving would be better. Once I moved, the company sent the letter that everyone loves to hear...."although your qualifications were outstanding, we're sorry to tell you that we...blah, blah, blah". So I tried to stay optimistic about things and starting pushing my resume out there. I got a couple of calls and a couple of interviews but nothing. I have been asking other people how long they have been out of work and some have said 6-8 months and also what I have read on this board. I really can not think of not having a job for that long, as I am going crazy now! I have decided that I made a bad decision by moving and am now reconsidering moving back to DC/MD. I moved in with my parents when I moved because I wanted to purchase a home and not waste money on rent EVER AGAIN (as DC got tons of money!! from renting :)) As my dream of owning a home in GA is in no reach since I cant get a job. Can you say, frustrating??? I applied for a position with a company (the office in Atlanta didn't think I qualified or the position was no longer open), so I applied for the same type position in DC and they emailed me back if I was in the area. I guess because I was on file for applying in Atlanta. Not only that, I worked for another company and worked with them part-time, and used them whenever I needed extra money (trips, hobbies, etc). They were very accommodating when it came to me calling and asking for hours. I asked to stay on the books because I was very nervous about this move to GA. They have recently contacted me to ask what am I going to do (since its been a couple of months)...if I am not coming back, they can remove me from the books. What should I do? My mind is going crazy. People tell me to be optimist but my confidence level is getting the best of me and it seems that I can have better room for advancement (career wise) in DC/MD than Atlanta. I really need an unbiased opinion. My friends in DC tells me that I should've stayed in MD (since I had a really good job) but then my friends and family in Atlanta tells me that I am not giving Georgia a chance. I NEED SOME SERIOUS HELP!! Any suggestions!!! Unless you want to permanently work in the gov't (which I assume DC/MD district is well known for), I be surprised that Atlanta doesn't have jobs to offer you. I've worked on both sides of the fence in gov't and private and would say there's things from both areas I like and things I don't. As I'm sure Atlanta doesn't have the same # of gov't jobs as DC/MD, are there some skills or areas of work the gov't has offered you that you'd like to work in? For me, I found that in scouting an area that doesn't have gov't jobs (and especially a substantially larger market), that there a lot more opportunities. In my own experience and wanting to buy a house with no means to do so, I understand its frustrating. All I know is being same approx. age, I don't really know 'what' I want to do yet. I have some good ideas, but its also about finding the right employer, opportunity and sometimes boss/manager. I know gov't can be a great employer but I've also seen private sector as great too. Do you have a specific job in mind, or are you willing to be flexible with it? This flexibility might be the reason you want to back to DC or not even consider Atlanta. Are there other job search methods you haven't yet considered? In a friend saying you're not looking at what Atlanta has to offer .... maybe they have something to suggest? And moving, is not exactly cheap ;) They way I see it, you can be unemployed in DC or unemployed in Atlanta. Since you're in Atlanta living with your parents that's got to be a lot more cost effective then moving back to DC and paying for an apartment while you job hunt. If you should get a solid offer from DC, then of course make the move (OFFER, not just interviews!), otherwise, I'd stay put and keep looking where you are.
