To Temp or not temp before movingI am planning to move to another city in the coming months which is some distance away. I've been looking into working with temp agencies lately simply because I do not want to work for an employer and leave a few months later. It will look pre-planned and might not get a good reference. That being said, I see no reason why an employer would not hire me. I have great references, good work history, a bachelor's degree + other education, great personality, etc. I've thought of approaching several large companies in my field that have more diversified and larger workforce in other city. On one hand, I have different plans in other city and not sure I'd take this on. On other hand it might give me opportunity to relocate to new city and have some moving expenses paid). I'm not sure how to approach this. Temp agency searches and applications have lead to dead end. Applied to a dozen well trusted ones. Thought I had a job last week and now I don't. I've been searching though job boards and such for keywords like 'maternity leave', 'contract', 'temporary', 'non permanent' '3 to 4 months' or similar for keywords but all results that come up are with the same temp agencies I've applied to or they're for CEO type positions - out of my league. I've called and followed up with agencies. Nothing and I interviewed well with them and they still say they're interested. Does anyone have suggestions on job search ideas or strategies? I'm beside myself that with the specific skills that I have and experience should be more than sufficient to get a well-paying job with an agency. I know it costs companies a lot to hire which is why I thought a temp agency would be a good choice. *bump* I just wanted to add, was planning to move in about 4 months. And I was hoping to work for a major company in the new city. I've applied in their on-line system and indicated am willing to work in current city and the new city. There are a ton more jobs in the new city. I'd like to speak with them about training in current city (paid) and then moving at my own expense to new one and am willing to sign contract to show I will stay with them. I specifically would prefer to work for this company: its large, pays really well, has tons of opportunities, provides education and benefits, would recognize my education and experience. As I can't contact company directly, and this isn't something I would think belongs in a cover letter, I'm not sure how to approach this. Frankly, its one of the few opportunities to make some serious $$$$ so I can save up and move. It costs them a lot to hire? Who has more money, you or them? It's admirable to care take the corporate structure, but you need an income! I'm assuming that you have already left your previous position. You may, unfortunately, over value your fit in the job market, depending on where you live--which is a rude awakening!! Your experience with the temporary agencies is similar to mine--nine registrations, positive for work and then--presto!--very little delivered! I even emailed the legislation for my state asking them to legislate a requirement for these agencies that have hired one to require that they supply at least six months of work or else why bother? It creates a confusing false reliance on something (work!) that they are not going to deliver--yet there is nothing wrong with your application! I say apply everywhere so that you do not have interrupted income. You may not be hired right away anyhow--which is horrible! Don't shortchange yourself.
