Temp to Perm

I have worked in IT support  in NYC for 9 years now.

For the first 6 years I worked at 3 different companies. And the only reason I had three jobs is because my 2nd one laid everyone off and was bought out by another company

After spending 3+ years at my 3rd job I was unhappy, so I left for a consulting position which was more money and a step up for me. It was also supposed to be a year long contract that was to be renewed every year.

But unfortunately I was lied to about the length of the contract and out of a job after only 4 months.

Ever since then I have not been able to find a decent permanent IT role. The past 3 years I have bounced from job to job. And every time either the contract was not renewed or I ended up quitting because the job was a nightmare.

I have never been fired or told I was not doing the job. but I have been told just about every other excuse, like the contract was ended because they wanted to go with an internal candidate, they didn't have the budget, they changed the job requirement, etc, etc etc.

So now here I am once again looking for a job and it seems like the only IT positions I get contacted about are these "temp to perm" positions that NEVER seem to go perm.

It almost seems like once I started consulting I branded myself as undesirable to people looking to fill permanent roles. Or as someone who can't get a permanent job which is totally untrue and unfair.

I don't know what to do. I am completely fed up with having to look for a job every few months. And I've  considered changing careers because I am tired of the cycle of taking temp to perm job that never pay off.

Are all IT jobs this way now, or is it just me? Has anyone else looking for IT support jobs experienced this temp to perm BS?

i do office work and have experienced the temp to perm bs. At this point I am so burned out I dont know what to do. I accepted a low paying job with no benefits because it was better than NO paycheck, and I do not want to use the employment agencies again. These companies doing this simply dont want to pay benefits. I always got positive reviews on my work, they just didnt hire me. Or in the the case of my last temp position, they said it was "long term temp, quite possibly lasting a year, possibly temp to hire".....ha. it lasted three months and I was informed on a Friday at 5 30 pm by the employment agency to not bother showing up on Monday morning, because they no longer needed me.
I am in same boat.  I have been temping for a year while "in between" jobs.  I have had some long term contracts but they have no benefits.  I get treated with little respect just because your a temporary.  It blows there mind when they find out I am working on my MBA.  That is all fine and dandy, but as you, I need a steady paycheck and benefits immediately.  I have applied for a admin job to get out of the temping nightmare.  I am thankful that I have it for some income, but I don't think its doing wonders for my resume.
