I have applied for a job outside of my current field, but closely related. I feel like I am qualified for the position, and have very good references from people inside the new industry. I need to know if it is appropriate to send those references to the prospective employer unsolicited? Also,  how long after the application deadline should I wait  or is it appropriate to make a phone call to check on my status or ask what their timeline for filling the position is?
