Adecco wants ss for online application
What do you think? Should I trust them? Please let me know soon!
If privacy is anywhat important to you, then NO. Adecco is NOT the company you will be working for, only a recruiting/HR firm.
Well, here is the full deal. Adecco wants to submit me for a contract position with General Electric and even though it is highly irregular that this information is mandatory, this particular manager that this recruiter is working with requires a social security number. He even admitted himself that this kind of information should be given only after you've gotten the job. That is why I am so uneasy with this. I have never been a victim of identity theft primarily because I am so paranoid. He even said I could come into the office if he feels that I am too anxious. I have been in this type of predicament before and have never given out my ss# under these circumstances. The excuse is always the same. "this company's system works in a way that they need a social security number for each candidate" but he told me that other managers that he has dealt with in this company does not require it. I just don't know. Has anyone else had this experience and if so, what did you do and what is your take on this? Has anyone ever heard of any horror stories? I have until Monday 22 October 2007 to make up my mind. Need feedback fast!
Here's the thing. Do you trust General Electric and Adecco or not? If not, don't give it and move on to a company you do trust. Any company can lose track of this kind of information, however, I'm pretty comfortable that ALL major companies (and GE and Adecco certainly are in the genre) will do their best to take good care of it, just as they would if you were actually their employee. So, it doesn't matter if you think the guy doesn't need it or if 20 other people provided it. The only question on the board to you is to provide it and move on in the process or don't provide it and be done.
Tess Tess, Not necessarily so. I have had my SSN comprimised and once saw it attached to a listing of emplyees on a board in an office open for anyone to walk out on, but it can happen. Just be very careful in this day and age, and just put the last 4, second two until an offer is pending, I am sure that if explained, it would be understood. Or maybe not.......
I would not do it and would apply elsewhere. Its not worth being a victim of ID theft IMO because the information is and will be passed through a 3rd party. Maybe its to verify your legality to work in the country before bringing you onto the job site. I'd only accept the position if the manager agrees to meet with me and present the card/number to him/her. Cut out the middleman with personal info. Is Adecco taking safeguards? Are they faxing or e-mailing over non-secure communication? I'd ask this too.
Everyone, thanks for your responses. I am opting not to. Although Adecco and GE are two recognizable companies, it is just something about this Adecco representative that just doesn't sit well with me. He also insisted on having my birth date along with my social security number. To me this signifies another red flag. Why the hell do you need all of that sensitive information this early in the damn game? Since it is only a contract position and it won't even pay me what I deserve to be paid, I am opting not to give them anything and not be submitted to GE. Although GE is one of my dream companies to work for. I know some GE employees (internally) who are working the system to try to get me in there as a full time permanent employee and I am going to keep my fingers crossed for that. I won't worry about the Adecco contract position with GE. Thanks again guys!
Adecco is an employment agency, correct. (Just asking because I am not quite sure). Anyway, the general rule of thumb for applying to ANY job is to never provide your social security number. It doesn't matter if the company has been in business for more years than the Vatiacan has had Popes. The hard and painful truth of the matter is ANY WEBSITE CAN BE HACKED. Hey, we all trusted Monster and they were broken into. I trusted USAJOBS.com and they have been broken into. Adecco can be broken into just as easily if not more so.
Kelly, you are right, Adecco is an employment agency. I have already decided not to pursue that opportunity. Looking for work is so stressful. You have to worry about an income and potential identity theft to boot. Why do so many people want your social security number at the application stage? It should be outlawed!
Adecco Agencies and GE have many contractors working for different GE divisions and departments. I know from been there done that with Adecco and GE. Adecco needs your social security number more for tracking purposes. Just like the bank or hospital uses it.. Too large of system. I have to do it other situations, too. I would not give number to an agency that is another part of state or country. | |
