Should I wait for the offer letter
Hello all! I've been posting a lot about my current job search progress and need some advice for the final step! I have been offered and I accepted a great new job (yay!). We have set up my official start date and some logistics (setting up email etc.) Since I "officially" accepted the job today the director is sending out an offer letter to me what entails the title, salary and benefits that were agreed upon during the interview process. She said I should sign the letter and bring it with me on my first day of work. Her is my question; should I wait until I have the offer letter in my hand to give my notice? In other positions I've never been given an offer letter just a verbal agreement so I have no experience with this. Mainly it's because my start date is fast approaching (November 5th.) And while I'll be able to give a little more than 2 weeks I still would like to give them as much as possible due to the nature of my job (I'm in fundraising, and we will have just finished with a huge event.) Any insight would be greatly appreciated! I have never even heard of an offer letter until someone mentioned it on here. Actually, this may be a very good idea, because it offers protection to both you and the new job. You have something in writing that says what you are going to be paid so the company cannot change its tune and present you with a paycheck with a lower salary. And, the company is safe from you coming back on them and saying that you think your paycheck is wrong because you are supposed to get X amount. Your letter proves you agreed to what you get. Anyway, just to be on the safe side of things, I would say wait for the letter before saying anything to your current employer. If for no other reason but to check the letter and make sure that what has been said is written down. If there is anything that is different contact the company and discuss it with them. All an offer letter does is confirm what you discussed. It isn't any more binding than verbally accepting. If your start date is fast approaching and you're reasonably sure that you're really starting that day, give notice.
Tess Tess is correct. I received my first "offer letter" when i was hired by my current company. It was a packet that contained 40 pages including my salary, commissions, bonuses, benefits and so forth. When the person who hired me said I had the job, she told me to report on a certain day and time to the region's Human Resource. During my third interview, that is when it was signed, sealed and delivered. That afternoon, I gave my two week notice to my employer.
I don't give my notice until I have that letter in hand. I have told them that when they make a verbal offer. They agree and send one out.
alc1580, I agree with OCSurfCity. Seeing as you don't have to start until November 5th, I would wait another few days until you get, sign, and return the offer letter before giving notice. Good luck on your new job.!!! | |
