Need some quick advice please
I had been out of work for almost 4 years (my son is now three) and needed to return to work quickly, so I took the first job offer that came along. I now work at a local grocery store in their service deli (weekly pay and benefits, but have to work with a mother-daughter team whose idea is that the rules don't apply to them) and I really dislike it. The company is okay but since I have been there less than 90 days I cannot transfer nor will my manager release me to another department. I have 12 years of retail experience but I am unsure I want to get back into retail. I have an associates degree and cannot afford to continue with a BA. What can I do? I am relocating in a year and a half and need to be in a better position then I am right now. Any advice? Should I just stay with my current job or find a new career field?
Should I just stay with my current job or find a new career field? Why not do both? It appears that you have to stay employed but, you can still check out the different fields that interest you and research them to determine if they are what you want to go forward and pursue. Gather some brochures from your local college and read them. For the majority of fields, you will have take some type of course to even get a certificate. A BA might be out of your reach right now, but taking one or two courses in a field you want ot be part of is definately in your best interests. When you have completed a few of these courses, you can list them on your educational resume and try for a position in a company where tuition reimbursement is offered. In the meantime, you will have to wait it out with terrible co-workers. And, lets face it, bad co-workers happen all over the place, though some are worse than others. When can you request a transfer? Who said you couldn't request it now? Even if you can't travel through a lateral transfer, how about submitting your application for a job in another department without going through your immediate supervisor. Just a thought that might not be true; your supervisor might be telling you that you can't move because he/sh doesn't want to go through the trouble of hiring and training someone new. (and the underlying reason of this might be that he/she doesn't want to have to work with the mother/daughter team alone even for a little while) | |
