Around a recruiter or not

Ok heres the rundown,

I was contacted by a recruiter who was representing a firm whom I have tried to approach for some time because the list of employers who do my line of work, and it's location is rather short.Yes these are firms that are hard to get a hold of, through too real people, because some are large and have many offices.

I talked with this recruiter, based on the west coast, ((I am EST), and explained early on that I wanted to discuss further exactly which firm it was, because I didn't want to "overlap" inquiries, or resume submittals. I also wanted to inquire which exact firm it was because there are several I won't work for.

Now I understand that it is $$ to them but my inquiry was only a way to say, thank you but no because of..X...X...X reasons.

Well after I had to run a complete listing of the firms , her saying "NO" (A cat / mouse" game )she said //Yes" I said OK no problem, but wanted to know further what the positon (of several I could do) would she be presenting me as...so here we go..

I called one of their offices to inquire exactly was the work involved that they were recruiting for.Jjust so I could kind of see what it was that I'd expect. The gentleman in HR was very nice after I expalined why I called and didn't want to "keep" a commision away from a recuiter, if in fact that is the way they preferred to seek candidates, he as well ,asked for me to forward my resume to him...

Question is, did I screw myself  merely inquiring about the exact work to be performed and sending my resume around the recruiter when asked?

Im puzzled, because the HR guy said he'd send a receipt of my email attachment and never did and the appointed time I was scheduled to speak with the recruiter on Friday never materialized, even though I returmed the followup call as scheduled (she had gone home for the day)

I really need work and this position, any advise? Did I goof?

Really need some insight from someone....Thanks

I need to recap this so that I can get it clear in my mind.

The recruiter contacted you with the intent to pitch a job with a company you wanted to work for. You discussed which places of employment you were interested in and which place the recruiter was calling regarding. The recruiter kept dangling some cheese and then whipped it away before finally admitting where she was from. Through all this, she was still ot letting you know what the position was for so you asked her and she hemmed and hawed and wouldn't give you a straight answer. So, you contacted a totally different part of the company to determine what the recruiter was talking about, spoke to a human resource dude who asked for your resume and you have heard nothing since then.

If this is the case then this is what I am thinking. The recruiter didn't represent the company and just told you that to get you to send her your resume. I make that assumption because she didn't seem to be able to give you any straight answers as to which division she was recruiting for and her hesitation to discuss the details of the exact position.

I think the human resource dude is probably on of the few truly overworked and underpaid souls in the company who really intended to send you the receipt for  your resume but couldn't because of "yet another crises" . (which happens in larger companies because of the lack of cross-training and the focus on "one job only".

I don't know if you goofed or not, but contact either the recruiter (I'm not sure I would--I have such a problem with trust) or the human resource guru on Monday to try to get some more light on the position.

Kelli,

Thanks. First after 3 months of looking, no return calls, promises and BS, I will admit I too, have a real trust issue as well. For clarification sake, here's more isight. This was an outside recruiter hired by the firm in clarification as well.

1. Yes , the recruiter called and I had to "fish" the Companies name out of her  because, and I was honest about itt , I wanted to insure that she wasn't "beaten out of a "commision" and to make sure it wasn't a company I may have already approached, or wouldn't work for. It was an honest inquiry to get backto work asat/ THAT was upfront to ease her mind, but I did run the list pass her until she said "OK how do you feel about that one?"...(her engrish was broken so)"

2. I called one of their offices and spoke to an HR type, who might be able to give me more deatils on the job, which the recruiter wouldn't have a clue about when asked , just where it was and the job title. He did share that he knew the firm recruiting and the persons name actually, but it was more of a "project" inquiry. He told me what he could that he knew, but in addition asked that send him my resume, as well. Her would let me know when it was received (my verification). I did explain that I didn't want to go around the recruiter,  to avoid the "he doesn't follow direction well",.....

But no receipt from him, scheduled talk with recruiter, after their supposed followup with HR manager of firm, and was scheduled but didn't happen  was exactly as this,

Ring, hello, extension 109 please, we had a scheduled phone appointment, hold please, ahh she's left for day"....(shes PST)

Did something happen here, I did wrong or did someone get miffed?....puzzled.....

Just need awnsers and the job...any job at this point

It is possible that the HR dude called the recruiter (since he knew who she was) after receiving your resume to make sure that she didn't drop the ball on you and she got ticked off because she thought you were checking up on her credibility. And that she perceived you did indeed go around her even though you were so insistant that you didn't want to mess up any commission she may be entitled to.

I am also thinking that, because she is west coast and you are east coast, that when she said she would call you at whatever time, it was HER time. There is a three hour difference between the coasts and when you called her, she may have thought you were trying to overstep her call.  Either that or you called her at 3:00 your time which means she may have left the office for lunch and the receptionist was in error.

I am mostly saying this because you said her English wasn't the best which means she may have misunderstood your intentions in any case. Still, I would call back today. It is just past 8:00 here so you are just past 11:00. Give her until 1:30 your time so that she can have some time to settle in and get her ducks in a row for the day. By the time you call her it will be 10:30 here.
