OK this is my situation i relocated to nyc after getting married. My last job was in HR and lasted 6 months and ended Dec 2006. I only left to get married , Upon arrival to nyc i had to wait 6 months for my greencard. I have had 16 interview with no luck and people cant seem to understand that it took me 6 months to get my greencard. I have listed the greencard issue on my resume but all people see is a work gap. I have gotten second interviews but someone with more experience always gets the job arg!!! Now i am taking a temp job in Hr that will last anywhere 3-6months to fill the work gap for 2007. My question is how do you list temp work on your resume? Can temp work be positive? Any Hr people out there who have done temp work to gain expereince?? Would love feedback GUYS!!! What I do is this, list it as contract. CONTRACT ASSIGNMENTS, 6/2006-Present List the two assignments that you done on resume. It is understood by more professional that there are job gaps in contract and temporary employment these days. Recently, I was started to be questioned by a young engineer, when the older supervisor jumped in and said, "We are only interested in the skills not gaps. " Most job applications don't do temporary employment justice. I have only seen a few even by employment agencies that do treat temporary workers fair. More people are becoming more aware of this situation, since more jobs are temporary than permanent due to the employers not wanting to pay for health insurance. State unemployment offices see it as employment. This is the fastest way to learn new skills in the shortest period of time. Your not stuck doing the same thing for years, so that makes you more marketable. I would take the greencard issue off my resume. Only address this issue in a cover letter or job interview, if needed. The greencard can be a negative, because if there hiring you permanent. Then the employer does not know how long you will stay.
